Library Collection Development Procedures: Binders and Loose-leaf materials selection

Policies, guidelines, and forms for subject specialists doing collection development

Binders and Loose-leaf Materials

If an item is available only in loose-leaf format, the requesting faculty member will be asked to confirm the request before the library purchases it because

  • A requestor is not always aware that the title selected is in a three-ring binder. We want to be sure.
  • Some materials that come in binders require periodic updates, and thus require subscriptions. This requires them to go through an evaluation process to be ordered as serials.
  • Some materials that come in binders include workbook pages or other pages meant to be removed and used. Thus, the book is not appropriate for long-term use by multiple users.

If the requesting professor confirms the request, the library will purchase the material. There will be some delay in availability, since it is our policy to send all loose-leaf materials to be hard bound prior to shelving.
