Criminal Justice: Infographics

What is an Infographic?

An infographic (information graphic) is a representation of information in a graphic format designed to make the data easily understandable immediately. It is an integration visualization technique that combines text with images into an illustration. Infographic designs convey a complex message or material, into interesting visual data.

 

Assignment

In this course, you will create and orally present, see infra, an infographic that demonstrates your understanding and application of a particular film and distinct theme(s) and apply the information you learned in the class through readings, research, and critically analyzing films. To create an infographic for this course, you must:

  1. Select one theme from a specific film of your choice not your assigned team film (e.g., in the film Sicario, the themes are terrorism, drug cartels, cartel violence, government malfeasance, and state-sponsored assassinations).
  2. Create a 1-page infographic on the topic. The infographic must include the following information:
    1. An informative and/memorable title
    2. A definition of your theme topic (e.g., if you select drug cartel provide a definition of same such as: a criminal organization composed of independent drug lords who collude with each other to improve their profits and dominate the illegal drug trade or Drug cartels form with the purpose of controlling the supply of the illegal drug trade and maintaining prices at an elevated level or Rivalries between multiple drug cartels cause them to wage turf wars against each other.
    3. Prevalence rates on the type of selected topic, if available (you must look up information from a reliable and credible source other than material discussed in class AND cite the source in APA format. Reliable sources include academic articles and .gov, .edu, and .org websites. Wikipedia, news outlets, Facebook, etc. are not reliable sources. If you have questions about the reliability of your source, please check in with me before starting.)
    4. Information on prevalence or scarcity of selected theme and its related concepts in the United States.
    5. Links to two to three sources for crime film studies. These can be either general resources or specific to the type of selected theme.
    6. A data visual (properly cited) that illustrates a portion of the information provided in steps b – d.
    7. Present your infographic in front of the class utilizing Power Point, Canva, Prezi, etc. Your oral presentation should be no longer than 30 minutes. Students will be assessed utilizing the attached Rubric.
    8. This is an individual grade from 0 to 100 points.
  3. You may use Piktochart (or other online resource), Word, PowerPoint, or Publisher to create the infographic. It can be submitted as a .png, .jpeg, .doc, .docx, .ppt, .pptx, or .pdf in Blackboard.
  4. Please refer to the course calendar in the syllabus for specific due dates and times

The program provides tools to add interactive maps, charts, videos, and hyperlinks. It can be submitted as a .png, .jpeg, .doc, .docx, .ppt, .pptx, or .pdf on Blackboard.
