AI Usage & Copyright

Some important takeaways BEFORE you use AI tools in your research process:

  • DON'T assume that you CAN use AI tools with research content
    • You need to consider permissions of at least 1) the creator of the content (e.g., authors, etc.) and 2) the publisher of the content (e.g., database, digital repository, etc.)
    • Even if the content is open access or used for educational purposes, if you don't have permission you cannot lawfully use it in an AI application
  • When in doubt, ask your librarian!

Databases with AI Restrictions

Currently, these are databases where you are NOT ALLOWED to use any of its content with an AI application:

  • EBSCO
    • EBSCO License Agreement (7/2024) - "Licensee and Authorized Users may not use artificial intelligence tools or machine learning technologies with any of the content included in the Databases or Services for any purpose."
