Helpful Archival Collections at the University Library

  • Cunningham (Jonathan R.) papers, MS287. Jonathan R. Cunningham served as Director of Planning for the City of El Paso from 1958-1978. The collection dated 1958 – 1978. It consists of correspondence, copies of speeches, and reports concerning areas such as city planning and zoning, the Chamizal, relocation of the Rio Grande, the El Paso International Airport, urban land use, community development, United States/Mexico border improvement and development, the environment, the Franklin Mountains Wilderness Park, Pueblo de la Ysleta del Sur, historic preservation, local history, population and housing trends, transportation and traffic projections, and international relations.
  • El Paso Department of Planning collection, MS204. This collection dates 1923 – 2006, bulk 1960s – 1990s. Types of records include reports, publications, photographs, and government documents that discuss city planning, housing, public health, water resources, utilities, neighborhoods, and other topics. Materials primarily relate to the El Paso borderlands, but some items are from Arizona, central and east Texas, Oklahoma, and other areas.

  • Alert Citizens for Environmental Safety records (ACES), MS439. Formed in 1983, Alert Citizens for Environmental Safety (ACES) was a nonprofit organization that researched, educated, and provided information to communities in Hudspeth County that would be affected by the construction of a low-level radioactive waste dump. The ACES records date 1989 to 1998, bulk 1992-1994. The records contain information about ACES members who played key roles in the fight against nuclear waste and environmental organizations. The records contain newspaper clippings, cartoons used in the press, faxes between other environmental organizations, publications, court cases, legislative papers, and extensive information about nuclear waste and sludge waste pollution.

  • Get the Lead Out Coalition records, MS615. Established on February 9, 2005, the Get the Lead Out Coalition worked to prevent the reopening of the American Smelting and Refining Company smelter (ASARCO) and publicized its threat to the environment and public health. The Get the Lead Out Coalition records date from 1989 to 2009, bulk 2005 – 2008. Types of records include meeting minutes, correspondence, newsletters, flyers, programs, printed emails, petitions, publications, clippings and newspapers, printed online articles, agendas, legal documents, and other printed materials. These records document the Coalition’s purpose, activities, and membership, as well as contain some pro-ASARCO materials.
