This guide is designed to help you access articles from accounting professional (or practitioners) journals.

WELCOME!!!

This guide is designed to help you access articles from accounting professional (or practitioners) journals that UTEP has subscriptions to. It also shows you how to set up Google Scholar directly to link to the UTEP library and find specific journals cited in Google Scholar.

Practitioner Journals Versus Academic Journals

Professional (or Practitioner) journals can be very helpful to accountants, auditors, and financial professionals.  These publications help professionals stay abreast of new accounting trends and practices. Articles published in professional journals are generally short and cover problems facing practitioners and the business community as a whole. The articles are written in a straight-forward way and use easy to understand terminology with the practitioners as the primary audience.  In this guide I have provided you with a list of practitioner publications that you should read regularly.  These journals can be accessed by UTEP students via the Business Source Complete database. To look at those journals click on the navigation tab “Publications for Accounting Professionals”

Faculty are the primary audience for academic research journals. Articles published in academic journals are generally long and the research is characterized as including a lot of mathematics and statistics. These articles can be difficult to understand if you don’t have a high level of statistical knowledge.  To look at those journals click on the navigation tab “Academic Research Journals”

Some journals have a mix of practitioner and academic articles. You can search the specific journal title in the Ulrich's Periodicals Directory (ProQuest) to retrieve a description of the journal and find out if the primary audience is academic, or if the journal is for both an academic/practitioner audience.
