  • Do I have to download anything to use RefWorks? No! RefWorks is a web-based tool, so you can use if from any device with an internet browser.
  • Can groups create a RefWorks account? Yes. RefWorks does not limit the number of accounts you create. Every account can have two types of access full and read-only.
  • How many references can I store in RefWorks? You may save an unlimited number of references within your RefWorks account. There is no limit on the amount of folders you can create either.
  • Is there a limit to the data I can put in the notes, abstracts and attachments?The notes, abstracts and attachments fields are limited to 5GB of information.
  • What happens when I graduate or if I leave UTEP? You keep your RefWorks account and everything in it for life! You can continue using it even when you are no longer affiliated with UTEP. Links to articles within the account will depend on your UTEP affiliation, but all references and attachments will remain accessible.

Export to RefWorks

In an EBSCO database:

  1. From the Search Results screen, select each reference you'd like to import into RefWorks by selecting the Add to Folder icon.

  2. Click Go to Folder View on the right sidebar.
  3. Click the Select/deselect all checkbox. Click Export (right sidebar).
  4. On the next screen, choose Direct Export to RefWorks. Click the Save button.
  5. RefWorks will open automatically in a new window or tab. Log in to RefWorks.

Exporting a List of Records to New RefWorks:

  1. Conduct your search and mark the records you want to import into RefWorks (you will need to do this one record at a time.)
  2. Click in the "Send To" link in the upper right corner of the page and choose Citation Manager.
  3. Click the Create File button, check that the details are correct, and click Save.
  4. Log in to RefWorks.
  5. Click the plus button and select Import references from the dropdown menu.
  6. Drag and drop the file you saved into the indicated space OR click on Select a file from your computer, select your file and click Open.
  7. RefWorks should recognize the file as a PubMed file.  If it does not, search for NLM PubMed and select it.
  8. Click Import.
  9. The records you saved will be imported automatically and should appear in your Last Imported folder.

Importing single citations

  • On the Search Results screen, select the citations you want to import into RefWorks by selecting the checkboxes to the left of the appropriate citations.
  • Select the RefWorks button Refworks button above the search results list.
  • The RefWorks Login page should open in a new browser window or tab. If not, manually open a new browser window or tab, go to Refworks and select User Login.
  • Log in to your RefWorks account with your username and password. (If you are a new user, you may create an account from a link on this page.)
  • Once you have logged in, you should see the RefWorks Import page. Click View last imported folder to see your imported citations.

If you are performing multiple searches in a database you may want use the Marked List feature. This will allow you to efficiently export citations from multiple searches at one time.

  • On the Search Results screen, select the citations you want to import into RefWorks by selecting the checkboxes to the left of the appropriate citations.
  • Then choose the Marked List icon Marked list icon in Web of Science. A check mark will appear next to the citations you've chosen, and the number of records you've marked will appear as a link next to the icon.
  • Once you've finished building your citation list, select the Marked List link (in parentheses next to the icon). You will be taken to the Output Options screen:

  • On the Output Options page, leave the bold fields checked. Make sure the ISSN box is checked; this enables UC-eLinks UC-eLinks button to work from within your RefWorks account. Check the Abstract field if you want to include article abstracts in your RefWorks database.
  • Under Step 3 select the Refworks button:

  • The RefWorks Login page should automatically open in a new browser window or tab. If not, manually open a new browser window or tab and go to Refworks and login.
  • From the Refworks Import page click View last imported folder to see your imported citations.
