Specialized Database Tips + Tricks

Web of Science This link opens in a new window
Allows you to search across the science spectrum. You have access to abstracts with links to the full text. Web of Science by default searches “topic” which is a proprietary search which Web Of Science is searching through the abstract, title, and author supplied keywords. Web of Sciences also allows you to see how many times an article has been cited by other authors.

Searches through hundreds of scientific journals which include psychology and the behavioral sciences. While it’s advanced search isn’t very robust, you can limit your search to journal title as well as specific type of science. Many non-full text you find in Web Of Science and EBSCO databases will be full text here.

While this database only searches through dissertations and theses, you can find what other graduate and doctoral students are researching and how the scopes of their projects and subjects may be similar to yours. Valuable citations may be found here.

Google Scholar
Search the internet for "scholarly" results only-- which could include book citations, articles, conference proceedings and presentation slides, and gray literature.
EXTRA USEFUL FOR: seeing which articles cited a particular article; a great way to see how research has moved forward from seminal publications
