The Power of Names: Place Names

Supports the Univ 1301 section "The Power of Names"

Studying Place Names

Books, maps, atlases, and gazetteers are the major sources for the study of place names. Many states, provinces, and nations have governmental agencies that are responsible for keeping track of place names; some websites are noted below. Place names can be local neighborhoods, towns and cities, states, regions, countries, and even extraterrestrial places.  In this section, information is included on toponymy: the names of geographic features such as rivers or mountains.

The books listed below are only a small sample of the materials available in the UTEP Library on place names and toponyms. For place names of a particular locality, search in the library catalog or databases for "Names, Geographical - [place]"
