Citing your sources is an important part of the writing process. Documenting your sources gives credit to authors whose thoughts and ideas you have incorporated into your work. By citing your work, you will strengthen your position and show the depth of your research. Most importantly, proper citation will help you avoid plagiarism.
There are hundreds of citation styles, please verify the citation format that your professor expects you to use. The most common citation format for the social sciences is the American Psychological Association (APA). Please see the APA Style Citation LibGuide created by the UTEP Library or the APA LibGuide created by Zayed University Library for more information. You can also view the APA Style Tutorial created by APA or the Purdue OWL: APA Guide by Purdue Online Writing Lab.
plagiarize- verb : to steal and pass off as one's own (the ideas or words of another)... -Webster's 3rd New International Dictionary.
Plagiarism is taken very seriously. It is a violation of UTEP's code of conduct and in some cases can result in expulsion. Sometimes students plagiarize without realizing that they are doing it. That is why it is important to cite your sources.
