This LibGuide is for students in HIST 4325:Social and Cultural History of American Medicine and Health Care taught by Dr. Michael Topp - Spring 2012.  This course examines the social and cultural history of medicine and public health in the United States during the nineteenth and twentieth centuroes.  Its primary focus is on sources that explore how conceptions of disease - both physical and mental - have served to create or intensify barriers among groups in the United States and/or its borders.

SUGGESTIONS TO BEGIN YOUR RESEARCH

* In the catalog or databases use keyword terms such as Medicine / Medical Care / Alternative Medicine / Social Medicine / Public Health.  

Consider adding term : United States History to above general searches.                  

* If you know them, use specific personal names as keywords.

* If you already know the topic for your reseach, enter those terms as keywords.

* If relevant, consider adding terms such as: legislation / historiography / attitude / history / minorities / race / treatment / policy / government / discrimination to your main subject term.

*  Check  the  Subject Heading area of the catalog book record for links to additional publications. 

* Look for bibliographies appended to books and articles on your topic
