Information Literacy

About Information Literacy

Information literacy has become an increasingly important skill to master in the Information Age. In academia there is an emphasis on strengthening students' information literacy skills to adequately prepare them to deal with "information overload", and the constant changes of information format and retrieval methods in their disciplines.

Information literacy is more than retrieving information; it includes how information is organized, identifying the best sources for a given need, finding those sources, evaluating, and using information ethically.

The UTEP Library believes that information literacy is a vital skill for our student population and takes an active role in providing information literacy sessions to equip UTEP students with skills to be competitive academics or professionals. Four panes demonstrate Information Literacy in action. Instrcution, Guides, 1 on 1 Meetings, and Tutorials are shown.

An Overview of UTEP Library Instruction Services

Information Literacy Classes

Taught by librarians year round. Classes equip students with information literacy skills and can be tailored to help them complete specific course objectives or assignments. Classes can be held at one of the library's computer classrooms, at a courses' assigned campus classroom, or remotely through Zoom.

Blackboard-Embedded Librarians

Let a librarian meet your students where they already are: in your Blackboard course shell.

Research Guides

Customized online guides are a versatile springboard students can use to access links to readings, tools, information, or resources pertinent to the class's theme or assignments.

Self-Paced Lessons

Developed by our librarians to provide quick and scalable information literacy skills to students. Designed to pair well with an Information Literacy Class.

To request any of these services, contact the UTEP Library's Information Literacy team at infoliteracy@utep.edu to get started!

Information Literacy Classes are intended to equip students with the ability to find, evaluate, use, and communicate information successfully. These abilities can be expressed through the learning and practice of:

  • Media Literacy (including Artificial Intelligence)
  • Research & Library Skills
  • Critical Literacy
  • Information Ethics

Librarians collaborate with course instructors create classes that instill one or more of these skills and that compliment class objectives and assignments. These may take the form of one full length class, or several mini classes throughout a semester. Classes can be hosted in-person (at the library or at on-campus classrooms) or online through Zoom.

For more information or to schedule a class, please email infoliteracy@utep.edu
