Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia: Home

Tips on methods and sources for research on ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.

Welcome to Pyramids and Prophets

While this guide is focused on the requirements for Dr. Ronald J. Weber's class on Pyramids and Prophets, it should be helpful for other history students and particularly those studying the ancient history of Egypt and the Levant.

Hints on Searching for a Book

In Nugget, the library catalog, with the Books and Journals tab highlighted, enter your search term. You can limit your search using the "facets" in the left column.  You can also see related search terms by scrolling down to the bottom of the page.

Searching Methods

There are multiple ways to approach your topic, no matter what it is. You won't find all the information in one place or under one subject search. You will need to find information from many sources and then put it all together in a coherent paper.

Explore many synonyms and related terms for your topic. Use Nugget, the library catalog, to find lots of subject terms. Also note terminology in encyclopedia articles. For example, for a paper on Linen Textiles in Egypt, I could search under different combinations of these terms:

  • Agriculture
  • Flax
  • Weaving
  • Weavers
  • Clothing
  • Linen
  • Textiles
  • Fabrics
  • Egypt
  • Nile Valley
  • Bronze Age
