Relates Texas Expectations of Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) to Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) information literacy standards

Goal 4: Summary: Identifies and Selects Appropriate Information Sources in Various Formats

Students need to be aware of the various types of information sources and which ones are most appropriate for a given topic. Does the topic require information from an encyclopedia, book, scholarly journal, government document, primary source, personal interview, web page of a subject-related organization, audio or video recording, documentary film, or other source?

TEKS: Kindergarten - Grade 2

Identify different forms of media (e.g. advertisements, newspapers, radio programs, with adult assistance.) (K.12A)

Decide what sources or people in the classroom, school, library, or home can answer [research] questions, with adult assistance.  (K.19B)

Decide what sources of information might be relevant to answer [research] questions, with adult assistance. (1.23B, 2.24B)

TEKS: High School

Determine, locate, and explore the full range of relevant sources addressing a research question and systematically record the information gathered. ( English, 21)

Follow the research plan to compile data from authoritative sources in a manner that identifies the major issues and debates within the field of inquiry. (English 1, 2: 21A)

Follow the research plan to gather evidence from experts on the topic and texts written for informed audiences in the field, distinguishing between reliable and unreliable sources and avoiding over-reliance on one source. (English 3, 4: 21A)

Locate, analyze, process, and organize data. (Tech Apps, 3)

Use a variety of resources, including other subject areas, together with various productivity tools to gather authentic data as a basis for individual and group programming projects. (Tech Apps, 3B)

Follow the research plan to collect information from multiple sources of information, both oral and written (e.g. data from experts, reference texts, online searches, maps, timelines, graphs, web pages, periodicals) (3.26A, 4.24A. 5.24A)

Collect and organize information from a variety of formats, including text, audio, video, and graphics. (K-5 Tech Apps, 3.3B, 4.3B, 5.3B)

ACRL Standards

Selects the most appropriate investigative methods or information retrieval systems for accessing the needed information. (2.1)

Investigates the scope, content, and organization of information retrieval systems. (2.1c)

Selects efficient and effective approaches for accessing the information needed from the investigative method of information retrieval system. (2.1d)

Follow the research plan to gather information from a range of relevant print and electronic sources using advanced search strategies. (7.23A, 8.23A)

Acquires, analyzes, and manages content from digital resources. (MS Tech Apps, 3)

Select and evaluate various types of  digital resources for accuracy and validity. (3C)
