Program Description

The Biological Science degrees offer concentration in Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Botany or Zoology. This is by far the largest undergraduate program in the College of Science. It is also possible
to study for secondary education concentration in biological sciences. The MS degree in biological sciences offers either a thesis or a non-thesis option.

The PhD in Biology prepares students for research on the pressing pathobiological problems of the region with an emphasis on (1) the pathogenesis of infectious diseases, (2) the toxic and carcinogenic
effects of environmental pollutants, and (3) neurological and metabolic disorders. Biology also actively participates in the PhD program in Environmental Sciences, including a new emphasis in
toxicology

Description of Existing Collection
NCIP Code: Monographs 3b; Journals 3b

The biological sciences collection is classified in QH, QK, QM (550-578), QP, QR, RC110-216, RV, GF, QD415-436, S, SB, SF,SD. There is a strong interdisciplinary emphasis in the collection, which also
reflects the regional and research interests of the department. Cutbacks in the breadth of collecting started in the late 1980's and have weakened the overall strength of the collection, especially in basic support areas and interdisciplinary fields of study. The recent journal and standing order cuts hurt the collection's
comprehensiveness.

Current Collecting Intensity
NCIP Code: 3a-monographs, 3b-journals

Current acquisitions cover both the undergraduate and the graduate programs. The PhD programs are also included in both monograph and journal purchases. There continues to be a need for journals on
specific topics in the PhD programs.

Desired Collection Level
NCIP Code: 4

The collection needs to be strengthened to support the PhD programs. The journal collection needs revision to support the newer interdisciplinary programs.
