Program Description

The Clinical Laboratory Science Program (formerly Medical Technology)is a professional program and prepares the graduates to function as professionals within the health care system with a Bachelor of Science in Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Students completing the 60 hours of pre-professional courses at the university or at a regionally accredited institution must apply for admission in the upper division having had their transcripts evaluated by the Office of Admissions and Evaluation. The program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science. The graduates are eligible to take the examination of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the National Certification Agency from Washington, D.C. Successful completion allows them to use MT and ASAP after their name.

The enrollment is limited to the number of clinical sites available.

Description of Existing Collection
NCIP Code: 1

Materials are located in the Library of Congress call numbers: QH 585.5, QR 46, RB37, and RB 38.5.

The "Selected List of Books and Journals in Allied Health Sciences" by the late Alfred N. Brandon and Dorothy R. Hill, 1994\1995, which appeared in the Bulletin of the Medical Library Association, Vol. 82, No. 3, July 1994, pp 247-264, was used to check the holdings of the library.

The library has 3 of the 22 titles on the list. for medical technology. It also has 5 of the 9 journals on the list for medical technology. The library has 3 of the 7 titles listed under hematology. and does not have the one journal title listed under hematology in the journal list.

Current Collecting Intensity
NCIP Code: 1

The material selected in the past supports the program to some extent. The monographs are limited for the undergraduate program but include research material for the faculty. The university does not have a school of medicine and the students use the local school of medicine's collection extensively.

Desired Collection Level
NCIP Code: 2

To collect at a 2 level a greater number of reference tools will be needed. Journals titles requested by the faculty to support student assignments are needed. A greater number of monographs recommended in the Brandon lists.

Other Resources

Locally, the Texas Tech School of Medicine branch in El Paso supplements the University of Texas at El Paso collection with medical texts and journals not being purchased by the university. Other libraries also available to the students and faculty are the El Paso Community College, the El Paso Public Library, New Mexico State University and the medical library of the Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez.

The Interlibrary Loan Department of the Library provides material not available in the area.

The library is a charter member of the Del Norte Biosciences Library Consortium which meets regularly to dialog and which has published a union list of member journal holdings.

These are the health sciences journals available in the regional El Paso area.
